take a brody
verb
- taking a chance on something. Origin: Steven Brody, who reportedly had jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge in 1886 and survived the fall. Hence the meaning of taking a big chance. It is a local colloquialism in Philadelphia.
I took a brody on the bottle of brandy. (Meaning he bought it without tasting it.)
I took a brody on a horse race once. It didn't work out for me.
