origin
- Nickname for a member of the Murphy tribe, e.g. Spud Murphy, a member of an elite cohort of Irish society, a term of honour, often used by non-Irish incorrectly as an insult, in particular by UK subjects of the Crown due to anti-Irish racism endemic in the colonial conquest of Ireland. Murphy is from the Irish for Sea Warrior or Hound of the Sea. The term Spud was applied due to Murphy virility as there were as many Murphys as there were Spuds in a field.
